Chapter 5 - The Results

Carol spoke before anyone could take a step. "We are not swapping two newborns based on birthmarks and a knitted hat."
"Good," I said. "Then test them."
"Test them," Bethany said at the same moment.
The hospital took DNA samples from both babies and rushed them to the lab. Administrators pulled the security footage from the assessment nursery, the transfer logs, and the name of every staff member who had touched either child that night.
Until the results came back, each baby stayed with the family holding her, with a nurse posted in each room.
Those were the longest hours of my life, and I have had some long ones.
Marcus kept drifting to the doorway to look down the hall. Bethany's room was three doors from mine, and twice I heard her crying through the wall. I lay there trying not to think about the fact that I might be rocking her daughter to sleep while she rocked mine.
Late the next afternoon, Carol came back. I knew before she opened her mouth. It was all over her face.
Marcus had been right.
"The results are conclusive," she said.
