Chapter 8 - What I Almost Let Slip AwayMarguerite held her grandson for about twenty minutes. She kept whispering his name. "Owen." Again and again. As though she were trying to memorize the sound. Emmett sat beside her the entire time.

Four days later, Marguerite passed away peacefully. Emmett was with her.
I still keep that folded piece of paper in Owen's baby book.
That afternoon taught me something I still think about. For several hours, I almost allowed one terrifying, confusing moment to erase three good years of marriage. I almost let my mother's past become my future. I almost assumed that Emmett leaving meant betrayal, simply because someone else had once left us that way.
