Chapter 4 - Entirely Free

The surgery itself was a complete success. The recovery that followed turned out to be more than physical — it became a genuine shedding of a weight I'd carried across fifty years of marriage without ever setting it down once.
I learned, slowly but completely, that I never needed to be useful to be worthy of love. I learned that a lifetime of quiet service was never supposed to be followed by a lifetime of equally quiet suffering.
Harold had spent his last years still tethered to me, in whatever way that counted, trying quietly to buy back his own conscience one deposit at a time. But no amount of money, however carefully saved up, could ever purchase the one thing I'd actually needed from him — a man willing to stand beside me, openly, in the light, instead of managing me carefully from a comfortable distance.
I am upright now. I am healthy.
