Chapter 2 - What Was Inside the Box

Inside the box was a single printed page — the hotel's breastfeeding policy — and underneath it, a photo.
A photo of her.
Taken by the camera mounted over the pool deck. Her face was perfectly clear. So was her arm, stretched out, one finger pointed straight at me.
The manager didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to.
"Ma'am, all of that was recorded," he said. "You harassed a nursing mother — a widow, here with two young kids. We have a zero-tolerance policy for this. I'm going to have to ask you to leave, and you won't be coming back. Your membership has already been canceled."
Her two friends had gone completely quiet.
Caleb grabbed my hand. He looked up at me with those wide eyes he got from his father and whispered:
"Mom… did he just stand up for us?"
I couldn't answer him. My throat had closed.
And then one of the friends — the one who'd laughed the loudest — stepped forward. She was twisting her sunglasses in her hands. She looked like she was about to be sick.
