Chapter 2 - The Recording He Left Behind

My hands were shaking as I broke the seal.

Inside was a letter in Walter's handwriting — the same neat, deliberate letters he used when he wrote down our chess moves. Underneath it sat a legal document I hadn't been expecting.

Whitfield waited until I looked up.

"Walter rewrote his will eight months ago," he said. "His children don't know yet."

"Rewrote it how?"

He folded his hands on his knee. "Completely."

Before he could say another word, the door opened without a knock.

Douglas walked in like he owned the place. The second he saw me his whole face pulled tight.

"What is she doing here?" he said. "This is a family conversation."

"She is family," Whitfield answered, not raising his voice at all. "She's Walter's lawful wife."

"She's a woman who slipped a ring on a sick, half-senile old man and waited for him to die." Douglas's voice climbed. "That marriage was a scam, Whitfield, and every person in this building knows it. Don't sit there and dress it up."

I didn't answer him. I held Walter's letter flat against my chest and let him talk.

"There's a second item," Whitfield said, ignoring the outburst. "Walter recorded a message. He made it two weeks before he passed. His instructions were that it be played in this room, with all of you present."

Douglas went very still. "What message? Nobody told us about a recording."

Whitfield reached into his briefcase, set a small recorder on the coffee table, and pressed a button.

Walter's voice came out of that little speaker and filled the whole room.

And the color drained out of Douglas's face.
