Chapter 3 - The Son Who Was Never His

By sunrise, the Ashford name had stopped being a dynasty and started being a crime scene.
News vans ringed the Carrington. A helicopter circled. Every business channel in the country was running Gerald's collapse live, on a loop, with a red banner.
But on the thirty-second floor, in a locked conference room, the only sound was Elliot's fingers on a keyboard.
The flash drive held folders. Bank transfers. Emails. Audio files. Medical scans.
And one document with a plain name.
*JULIAN_ORIGIN.*
Simone sat in a holding room downstairs, refusing to speak to anyone.
Julian sat across the table from Gerald, his face wiped clean of everything.
Vivian stood by the window in Marcus's coat. Tessa paced like a front moving in. Wren held her mother's hand. Marcus watched the door.
Elliot opened the file.
A fertility clinic record filled the screen.
Gerald frowned. "What is that."
Elliot read it in silence. Then his expression shifted, and he turned — not to Gerald.
To Vivian.
Her stomach dropped. "Elliot."
He said it quietly. "Julian isn't Gerald's biological son."
The room went dead.
Julian let out a laugh with no humor in it. "That's not funny."
Elliot turned the monitor around.
The record was not vague. Seventeen years ago, Simone had used donor treatment in secret. The donor was unnamed. Gerald's own genetic profile was flagged, in a doctor's flat handwriting, as *incompatible.*
Julian stood so fast his chair went over backward.
"No."
Gerald stared at the screen. The company. The marriage. The betrayal. The wife he had thrown away on the worst day of her life. All of it built on a boy who had never carried a drop of his blood.
For a moment nobody breathed.
Then Julian looked at him.
"Dad?"
That one word did what the document couldn't.
Because Gerald, after everything, answered it.
"I'm here."
Julian's face came apart.
"I didn't know. I swear I didn't know."
Gerald crossed the room before his pride could stop him. Julian pulled back at first — then folded into him like a kid half his size.
Gerald held him. Stiff at first. Then hard.
Vivian looked away, tears sliding down her face. Not because Gerald had earned a single ounce of comfort. Not because Julian was innocent. But because a child had been raised for seventeen years as evidence of a man's ego, only to find out he'd been a chip in somebody else's game.
Tessa stopped pacing. Her anger didn't disappear. But something human moved under it.
"Who am I," Julian whispered.
Gerald closed his eyes. "I don't know. But you are not the thing she did."
Elliot was still scrolling.
"There's another folder."
Tessa came around the table. "What now."
He opened it.

The title sat there on the screen.
